America's Front Yard Tour
Waitlist Only
Friday, Jan. 15, 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Take a look behind the scenes of America's front lawn into some of Washington’s most notable attractions. You'll get an in-depth look into the monuments and museums, and learn about the stories behind them. First, enjoy indigenous cuisines of the Americas at the Mitsitam Café of the National Museum of the American Indian. “Mitsitam” means “Let’s eat!” in the Native language of the Delaware and Piscataway peoples. Tour the museum on your own after lunch and learn about the contemporary lives, languages, literature, history, and arts of the Native Americans. Your day continues with a guided tour of Washington icons like the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, and the World War II Memorial. Then explore America’s treasures from the original Star-Spangled Banner and Abraham Lincoln’s top hat to Dizzy Gillespie’s angled trumpet and Dorothy’s ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz” at the National Museum of American History. Lastly, head over to the National Archives and Records Administration where you can see the Declaration of Independence and learn about your family history or research military records from relatives who served in one of the World Wars—or even the Civil War.
DC INSIDER: The developers of the Washington Monument originally wanted it to be located at Jefferson Pier, but concerns about the bearing capacity of the soil prevented it. However, the marker served as a benchmark during the first phase of its construction.
